Here is the essay that helped me get into CCNY! I am proud of it.
Growing up in a diverse community, I was exposed to various cultures and perspectives from an early age. However, it was during my early years in a new environment that I personally encountered the harsh reality of xenophobia. Unwelcome glances and hushed whispers became the soundtrack of my existence, revealing the pervasive presence of xenophobia in my daily life.
Flying over thousands of rivers and deserts,I was a young man who found myself recently relocating from a small country named Bangladesh. Excited but slightly nervous, all of us in the family hoped to find a warm and welcoming community that would embrace our diversity. However, soon after settling in New York, I began to notice subtle signs of xenophobia. At first, it was the curious glances that I was subjected to from some of my neighbors as I walked down the street. Normally, I shrugged it off, assuming it was merely curiosity about the new face in town. But as time went on, those glances turned into something more. One day, I decided to visit a local cafĂ© to enjoy a cup of coffee and meet new people. As I entered, I sensed an abrupt change in the atmosphere. Conversations ceased, and the customers’ eyes seemed to fixate on me. I naturally felt uncomfortable but chose to persevere, hoping to prove that cultural differences shouldn’t hinder human connection. Approaching the counter with a smile, I placed my order. However, the barista’s demeanor was distant and cold. I was able to notice the whispers between staff members, and though I couldn’t understand their words, the tone of their voices conveyed a sense of judgment and exclusion. My optimism began to waver, replaced by a sinking feeling of isolation. In another instance, I attended a community event a few months after where I hoped to interact with locals and learn more about the town’s traditions. I approached a group of people engaged in lively conversation, eager to join in. However, as soon as I introduced myself, the enthusiasm evaporated from their faces. Their polite smiles turned into strained expressions, and the conversation abruptly shifted to more insular topics. The isolation and rejection I had experienced were deeply disheartening. The xenophobia I encountered seemed to permeate every aspect of my life, casting a shadow over my dreams and aspirations.
Newly moved into New York, becoming the target of xenophobic actions and interactions was a jarring experience, as I had never before encountered such explicit prejudice. The initial shock left me feeling isolated and confused, questioning my identity and place in a society that prided itself on diversity. This encounter prompted me to reflect deeply on the root causes of xenophobia and its impact on individuals and communities. Rather than succumbing to bitterness or retreating into my own cultural bubble, I chose to confront xenophobia head-on. I began engaging in conversations with both those who held xenophobic views and individuals from different cultural backgrounds. These discussions provided me with valuable insights into the fears and misconceptions that often underlie xenophobic attitudes. By actively listening and empathizing with others, I discovered the power of education and dialogue in dismantling prejudice. Recognizing that knowledge is a powerful tool, I sought opportunities to expand my understanding of different cultures. I joined cultural clubs, attended international events, and took courses that explored global perspectives. Immersing myself in diverse environments allowed me to appreciate the richness of various traditions, customs, and beliefs. Through these experiences, I discovered the importance of challenging stereotypes and breaking down barriers between cultures.
Overcoming my personal encounter with xenophobia transformed my perspective on societal prejudices. I realized that combating xenophobia required not only individual growth but also active engagement with others. Despite the initial hardships I faced, my journey serves as a testament to the power of resilience, empathy, and the belief that a united community can overcome xenophobia and build a brighter future together.
