Topic Overview
My research will dwell on the changing nature and viability of the American Dream in modern society. The American Dream, as an essential tenet of American identity, is questioned because of growing economic inequality, limited mobility, and systemic barriers that raise questions over the notion that hard work alone guarantees success. This topic is important, as it looks into the disjuncture between idealized beliefs of opportunity set against the economic and social realities being faced by many Americans today.
Purpose
My research will be an analysis of the conditions that contribute to the decline in attainability of the American Dream and an exploration of the reasons why the American Dream seems to be declining in modern society. I’m planning to trace how income inequality, stagnant wages, and debt spur and hinder the average individual’s ability to reach financial stability and success. My research will address the following questions:
Questions
- How does economic inequality impact social mobility and the pursuit of the American Dream?
- In what ways do stagnant wages along with rising living costs contribute towards financial instability?
- How does the increased debt burden-student and personal-interfere with the pursuit of traditional milestones associated with the American Dream?
- Are there new avenues of opportunity, such as technological innovation, that support the American Dream, and who can access them?
Audience
The main target groups of this research will be policymakers, economic researchers, and educators who show interest in understanding social mobility and economic equality. Students and people worried about their economic future, as well as reformists interested in policy changes to ensure equal opportunity, also fall into this category.
Approach
I will be reviewing academic articles and data from economic and social studies that show the level of economic inequality, wage tendency, and levels of debt in the U.S. I will also incorporate case studies on how such factors affect different demographics, including immigrants and young adults. I will try to balance it by reviewing arguments that suggest new paths to success through technology and entrepreneurship. Challenges may include identifying sources that capture the full range of perspectives on this complex issue, which I will address by utilizing a mix of academic publications and firsthand accounts.
Significance
This is important research because it will help bring to light the barriers of so many in their attempts at success in modern America. In this respect, I seek to add to the literature on how economic and social structures impede or realize the American Dream. To my audience, this research can provide insight into policy changes and educational initiatives that may be used to restore the American Dream as an attainable goal for all.
